ChessKing™ software will run on Macintosh computers which do not support colors (such as the original MacPlus). For this case, the icons used are those created by Eric Soldan and used in his program Kibitz which is part of the AppsToGo application package. For further information, Apple's AppsToGo may be downloaded from Apples programmer's FTP site. In addition, you may, if you choose, select Shoemaker icons using an option in the File menu called "Insert New Chess Pieces...".
For Color Capable Macintosh Computers
You can change the chess icons by selecting "Insert New Chess Pieces..." from the File menu; if you have System 7.5, then you double click on the window title bar (so that Window Shade will pull up the content of the window), then you double click on the window title bar again (so that Window Shade will make the contents of the window visible again; now the board will be redrawn with the new chess pieces on it.
There are four possible icons used to represent the pieces:
Suzy Without
This stands for "Suzy's Original Icons modified by Shoemaker". Specifically, the masks for the original icons were contracted and further embellishments were made to the icons as Shoemaker (me) saw fit. Anything bad about these icons should reflect solely on me and not on Suzy, for changing the mask significantly changes the feel of the icons.
These are the default chess icons used by ChessKing™ software.
When running ChessKing™ software on color capable Macintosh computers using the default icons, the icons will not show up properly unless you set the screen depth (using the Monitors control panel) to 16 or more colors or shades of gray (where, if you can only support a depth of 16, then you should choose 16 shades of gray to make the icons look their best).
When ChessKing™ software is run on Macintosh computers that do support colors, then the user should not, using the Monitors control panel, set the screen monitor depth to Black and White. Regardless of how the screen depth is set, the icons seen are those created by Eric Soldan and the color version of these icons are those created by Suzy Heithcock (but if the screen depth is set to Black and White, then the icons won't show up correctly due to the modifications that I made and which will be now discussed). I have changed the mask for the color version of the icons so that it does not "surround" the icon creating a white outline (which is needed only if the screen depth is set to Black and White); because the surrounding mask has been altered, further alterations to the colors/shades of gray in some icons will be made if none have been made by me already.
In other words, if you don't like the standard Chess icons for any reason or you don't like the behavior of these icons (when you change the screen depth), keep in mind that I have modified them and in so doing they may or may not be what Suzy Heithcock had in mind; so, if you don't like the icons, don't think that it reflects on Suzy's work as an artist, instead, blame me for I have modified them.
Suzy Standard
The icons are by Eric Soldan and the color version of the icons are by Suzy Heithcock. These icons also appear to have been based on the Linares font. The color versions of the icons should show up with the screen depth (set by the Monitors control panel) is set to 16 or more colors or shades of gray (if you only have at most a depth of 16 you should choose 16 shades of gray).
These are the original icons and I may or may not have modified them. The use of the icons is different from that of the program Kibitz and thus Suzy's icons look different (there is a white border around each one, an effect which isn't seen in Kibitz). If I have modified them I haven't kept track of the modifications. If you want to be sure that you are looking at Suzy's original icons there are no guarantees (that is, download AppsToGo from Apple's developer's FTP site and look at the application Kibitz to see the true, originals).
Shoemaker Standard
The icons are by me and are based on the Linares font.
Shoemaker Rosewood
The icons are by me and are based on the Linares font. The screen depth (set by the Monitors contorl panel) should be set to 256 colors. These rosewood pieces seem to look best when used with the chess boards called "Shoemaker Brd 256 Bright", "Shoemaker Brd 256 Colors", "Shoemaker Brd 256 Colors Noz 20", and fair with the boards called "Shoemaker Brd Blue 256 Colors" and "Shoemaker Brd Blue 256 Noz 20", and not so hot but maybe (depending on your taste) for the boards "Shoemaker Cntr3t 256", "Shoemaker Cntr3t Dark Choc 256" and "Shoemaker Cntrst Brd 256".
